Learn about the most popular backyard design trends and how natural gas can add value to your outdoor spaces.

Gas firepit in backyard

Functional outdoor space was the number one must-have for 2023 homebuyers, according to Zillow, and demand for such spaces isn’t going away. Dubbed backyarding by some, homebuyers want fun and relaxing places to entertain friends and family while enjoying nature.

4 major outdoor design trends

Design experts at Houzz have outlined four major outdoor design trends for 2024.

  1. Smaller may be better. Builders constructing smaller homes with modest-sized yards should consider adding a small patio or deck to unused space. With natural gas grills available in a wide range of sizes, there should be a model to fit these spaces. Such grills eliminate the hassle of dealing with charcoal or propane tanks.
  2. Expanded living space. Larger outdoor gathering areas can help maximize living space and provide home entertaining experiences that will please everyone. Consider anchoring the area with a natural gas fireplace, fire pit or other focal point to attract guests outside. Natural gas patio heaters are another option for extending the outdoor season.
  3. Protection from the elements. In regions that experience harsh weather, screened-in or glassed-in porches are growing in popularity. They also keep out pesky insects. Make sure there is seamless integration between the home and porch.
  4. Hardscape becomes softscape. Garden paths and patios made of pavers separated by ground cover have gained popularity because of their natural look, permeability and design versatility. A walkway or patio becomes part of the garden.

Natural gas is perfect for backyard living

Outdoor spaces with patios are still in demand, with oversized fire features becoming more popular, whether it be fireplaces or fire pits. Both natural gas fireplaces and fire pits come in a variety of styles and with auto-ignition for a clean, smokeless flame. No more messy cleanups of ashes.

Fire pit tables are also in demand, with the advantage of providing a place for serving drinks and appetizers. Appliances fueled by natural gas operate more cleanly and efficiently than propane or charcoal, reducing harmful emissions and operating expenses.

Other design experts see outdoor kitchens expanding with more luxurious features, like built-in fireplaces, custom pizza ovens, smokers and wine refrigerators. Chefs will appreciate the fast and more precise cooking times that come with natural gas ranges, so they can spend more time with their guests.

Natural gas outdoor pizza ovens produce extremely high temperatures, with the pizzas being done in minutes. A large number of guests can be accommodated, and the pizza oven can also be used for roasting meat, cooking vegetables and baking bread.

By adding these popular features, you can add value to your homes and sell them faster.
